NUNEZ BETANCOURT, Amaury; MORALES RODRIGUEZ, Cándido Moisés; RIVERA MARTINEZ, María Eugenia  y  GONZALEZ GONZALEZ, Ángel Lorenzo. Aminoglucoside: when and why should they be administered once a day?. Rev cubana med [online]. 2006, vol.45, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-302X.

Aminoglucosides are a family of antibiotics that are widely used due to their activity against gramnegative bacteria. They are usually administered by intravenous route in multiple daily doses. However, their use have been questioned due to the nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity they produce. Diverse strategies have been proposed to reduce this toxicity, among them, the single daily dosing, in which the same amount of antibiotic is administered once a day. There are different criteria on this regard at present. A bibliographic review was made to unify criteria on the use of aminoglucosides at extended intervals or in a single dose. An intense search was carried out to find references of qualified studies and review articles on this topic. The selection criteria demanded the existence of clinically controlled randomised studies in adult patients that compared the single daily dose with the multiple daily dose, and the administration of drugs by parenteral route. The clinical and microbiological efficiency of the single daily dose was proved, and recommendations were made on this regard.

Palabras clave : Single daily dose; aminoglucosides; antibitoic treatment.
