Resumen

HERNAN ESTEVEZ DEL TORO, Miguel et al. Osteoporosis en premenopausal women with systemic lupus erythematosus. Rev cubana med [online]. 2007, vol.46, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-302X.

The prevalence of osteoporosis en patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is not well known. A cohort study including 96 patients with SLE and a control group of 96 apparently sound women, matched with the patients by skin colour and sex, was conducted to identify its frequency in premenopausal women with this disease and to know some of the risk factors associated with its presence. Demographic data were collected in the 2 groups and the presence of toxic habits, such as alcohol, coffee and cigarettes, the age on diagnosis, the time of evolution of the disease and the drugs used were determined among the sick. Patients and controls underwent a densitometry by means of a calcaneus osteosonometer, and they were classified into normal, osteopenic and osteoporotic. The presence of osteoporosis was related to the variables considered. It was observed osteoporosis in 10 of the 96 patients (10.4 %) and in only one woman of the control group.  The difference was statistically significant (p = 0.005). The relative risk of having it is ten times higher in the sick than in the controls, and it has a significant connection with its presence, the longer time of evolution (p = 0.04) and the accumulated dose of glucocorticoids  (p = 0.008). Risk factors as the consumption of alcohol, coffee and smoking were not associated with the presence of osteoporosis. It was concluded that osteoporosis appears in patients with SEL and that the accumulated dose o glucocorticoids is associated with its presence.

Palabras clave : Systemic lupus erythematosus; osteoporosis; glucocorticoids.
