HART CASARES, Marcia et al. Resistance to antibiotics in Acinetobacter baumanii isolated from January to March, 2010. Rev cubana med [online]. 2010, vol.49, n.3, pp. 218-227. ISSN 1561-302X.
Introduction: The infections due to Acinetobacter baumannii have increased in past years in patients admitted in intensive care units leading to an increase of resistance to antibiotics and of hospital costs, a greater hospital morbidity and mortality. Methods: All strains of Acinetobacter baumanni isolated from January to March, 2010 were studied, identified according to the compact VITEK 2 automated system methodology, following the recommendations of manufacturer (BioMérieux, Francia) with ID GN cards, the sensitivity tests were carried out with AST N82 cards with automated reading. Results: Acinetobacter baumanni was isolated in 40 patients. The 77 % correspond to strains isolated from blood. We achieve high percentages of resistance to all beta-lactamase antibiotics even with beta-lactamase inhibitors, the resistance was of 100 % to ampicillin, of 98.6 % to ticarcillin-clavulanic acid and of 66.7 % to ticarcillin-tazobactan. In the interval of 8 years has been an increase of 82 % of resistance to Imipenem as well as with the Meropenem. There was a 100 % of sensitivity to colistine and tigecicline. Conclusions: The strains showed high levels of resistance, mainly to beta-lactamase antibiotics including the carbapenemic5 ones. The resistance to aminoglycosides and quinolones was very high; however, the colistine and the tigecicline remain with a 100 % of sensitivity. The leading mechanism of resistance founded was the presence of carbapenemase, which is a great clinical, microbiological and epidemiological challenge in assistance activity.
