Results obtained in the Microbiology Laboratory of "Dr. Carlos J. Finlay" Central Military Hospital with the use of a new culture medium for the isolation of Leptospira sp. strains, are reported. A sample formed by all patients hospitalized during the period of January, 1993 to December, 1994 in the above mentioned center was used for the study. The culture medium was assayed in the laboratories of Leptospira of the National Center of Epizootiology and Zoonosis, and of the "Finlay" Institute. In both centers the viability, low contamination degree, and good growth of the strains in the medium were evidenced. In oder to demonstrate the effectiveness of the culture medium to any type of Leptospira sp. strain, the identification of them was performed by serogroups.
