In epidemic neuropathy, the lack of neurophysiological studies have made it impossible so far to objectively evaluate damage to autonomic nerve fibers. This paper was aimed at assessing the autonomic function using a set of tests based on cardiovascular reflexes of patients. To this end, 59 patients with clinical criteria set by PAHO for the diagnosis of this disease were studied. A study was performed in a group composed by 14 healthy subjects and 45 patients. 70% of the cases had some kind of cardiovascular autonomic function disorder. The tests showed alterations in the basal neurovegetative equilibrium in 64% of patients and in the cardiovascular vegetative nerve path in 36% of them. Significant differences were detected for the different tests in both groups. The results allow us to state that there is a significant damage to cardiac vegetative fibers in epidemic neuropathy. The basal neurovegetative equilibrium is a sensitive test for early diagnosis of neuropathy. This method constitutes at present an important tool for the diagnosis and course of the disease, particularly in patients requiring a medical expert´s report.
