A descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study was undertaken among patients receiving attention at the evaluation office of the Multidisciplinary Team of Gerontological Care of “Ana Betancourt” Polylcinic during the first semester of this year. The figure amounted to a total of 201 aged individuals. The sample was finally composed of 150 older adults that underwent a study of their cognitive capacity. Instruments validated for this purpose were applied (Folstein's test or MMSE, and Scale Rating Dementia or CDR). According to the results of these cognitive tests, the elderly were divided into 3 groups: a) elderly without cognitive disorder; b) with midl cognitive disorder; and c) with demential syndrome. 69 % of the aged (n=104) had no disorders of the cogtnitive sphere, 16 % (n=24) showed minimal or mild cognitive disorders, and 15 % (n=22) suffer from demential syndrome. Cognitive health prevailed in 39 % of the group aged 70-79. 88 % of them are white, 45 % are married, and most of them are unemployed. 66 % consumed coffee, 44 % smoke cigars, and only 4 % drink alcohol repeatedly and excessively. Arterial hypertension affects 57 % of the older adults with cognitive health.

Palabras clave : Cognitive health; mild cognitive disorder; demential syndrome.
