A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the M. Ascunce General Hospital, City of Camagüey, from January 1, 2001 to January 1, 2003 to assess patients under 65 who died from cerebrovascular accident. The frequency rate was higher among males over 40, and arterial hypertension prevailed as clinical manifestations. Computerized tomography proved useful for 56, 52 % of ischemic patients and for 44, 87 % of hemorrhagic patients. Cerebral edema was both the most frequent complication and cause of death. Basal ganglio and right brain hemisphere were the most common locations. Neuroprotection was the most common therapy.
