The main aspects of a methodology of fast application developed at the National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology for evaluating health risks due to exposure to hazardous wastes, mainly toxic, are presented taking into consideration the specific characteristics of the country so as to establish priorites for preventive actions on the basis of the danger they represent for human health. The methodology developed by the Agency of Toxic Substances and Register of Diseases of the United States of American in 1992 was adopted as a reference for the preparation of our methodology. The procedure proposed for evaluating risks consists of 6 basic stages. The methodology was tested in two case studies conducted in Havana City to verify the feasibility of its applications.
