Resumen
TRIANA MANTILLA, María Eugenia y FE MENDIETA, Heriberto. Tiocianato sérico: un marcador bioquímico para discriminar fumadores de no fumadores. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 1999, vol.37, n.3, pp. 141-145. ISSN 1561-3003.
73 apparently sound individuals of both sexes with an average age of 28.55 years old were studied aimed at validating the technique of quantitation of thiocynate (-SCN) in serum. It was observed that smokers had concentrations of -SCN (110.86 ± 6.34 mmol/L) significantly higher (p ³ 0.001) than nonsmokers (23.38 ± 2.2 mmol/L). Lineal direct correlations were found between the levels of -SCN and the number of cigarettes and the grams of out tobacco (r = 0.698, p ³ 0.05). The concentration value of 50 mmol/L was chosen to distinguish smokers from nonsmokers, with 97.9 % of sensitivity, 96.0 % of specificity, and 2.1 % and 4.0 % of false positives and negatives, respectively. It was concluded that the method is useful to discriminate smokers from nonsmokers and that it may be very useful at the departments of prevention and intervention.
