Resumen

DAUVAL BORGES, Carlos; URDANIVIA CRUZ, María O  y  HERRERA ALONSO, Francisco. Ensayo de un medio de cultivo para conservación y transporte de estreptococo. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 2002, vol.40, n.1, pp. 26-30. ISSN 1561-3003.

To contribute to the isolation and efficient diagnosis of the b-haemolytic Streptococcus, which has caused scarlet fever in some day care centers of the city of Cienfuegos, it was decided to obtain a culture medium different from the conventional one that will guarantee the viability of the strains for future studies. To this end, a research was done to determine the effectiveness of a single culture medium, of low cost and easy preparation for the conservation and transport of Streptococcus strains in the laboratories of Microbiology of the Provincial Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology of "Gustavo Aldereguía Lima" Hospital of Cienfuegos province, from January to April, 2000. A modification of the Todd-Hewitt broth was assayed with 0.1 % of extract of yeast and agar to obtain this medium. Of 52 studied strains, 50 showed viability after 30 days (96 %), whereas growth and hemolysis were observed in 9 (90 %) of 10 strains conserved for 100 days. The substrate also proved its efficiency as a means of transport when 16 strains were transferred to a distant Reference Center and 100 % kept viable and useful for their study.
