Resumen

MOHAMED GHARAMA, Al-Rae  y  MAS BERMEJO, Pedro. Economic and social factors related to health indicators in the Republic of Yemen. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 2005, vol.43, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3003.

The heakth system in Yemen is a consolidation of 2 health systems (North and South). These health services are based on 3 levels: primary health care (units and centres), secondary services (districts and governorate hospitals) and the tertiary health care with the universitary specialized hospitals. The health human resources are over 40 000 workers. The main problems of this sector in the country are connected with communicable diseases and there are also difficulties in the health system. On comparing Yemen with other countries of the region, it is observed that the health status of the population of Yemen is the most backward. The Government of the Republic of Yemen makes great efforts to revive the economy and to improve the living and working conditions of the people. There have been advances in many sectors of the economy, excepting health, so the reform of this sector recommended to improve the health status of the persons, as well as the efficacy and effectiveness of the health system acting. However, due to the failure of this reform, the health status of the poor and of the middle class is worse as a result of their incapacity to afford the price increase of these services.

Palabras clave : Health indicators; reform; Yemen; economic and social factors.
