This article recognizes the importance of the development of cognitive skills for the integral formation of students in relation to the four basic pillars of education proposed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It is also recognized the need to develop mathematical competences in the Colombian Secondary School in the five types of thinking that are addressed: Numerical; spatial and geometric; metric; variational and algebraic and analytical; and random. Finally, the development of mathematical competences is diagnosed in the Pedro Vicente Abadía Educational Institution of Guacarí, Colombia, and it is concluded that there is a need for research that allows teachers to direct the teaching-learning process of Mathematics so that develop mathematical competences in their students.
