Introduction: innovation projects and their management have acquired ever-growing relevance as a tool for the development and competitiveness of organizations, regions and countries, particularly in low-resource settings. To consolidate their development and application, it is necessary to deeply analyze worldwide scientific production on the topic. Objectives: become familiar with the current status of innovation project management based on the characterization of bibliographic records of scientific papers on the topic indexed in Scopus database and published in the 2001-2011 period. Methods: a bibliometric analysis was conducted of publications dealing with innovation projects and their management as indexed in Scopus database in the 2001-2011 period. A total 720 papers were identified. A study was conducted of their productivity by year and country, the most productive authors and institutions, and the levels of cooperation between authors. Results: a tendency was observed toward an increase in the number of publications from developed countries, and low representativeness of Latin American countries.
