Resumen

MERINO, Luz. The New Art Exhibition: Fissure or Fracture?. UH [online]. 2018, n.286, pp. 18-40. ISSN 0253-9276.

Ninety years after the 1927 exhibition called "Exposición de Arte Nuevo" -Exhibition of New Art-, this paper revisits it, examining the stance taken by critics so far on the significance of this event which has been always considered a fracture, i.e., an epistemological break with the entire previous outcome. However, this paper is aimed at getting Exposición de Arte Nuevo to be understood as a fissure, a contribution to transforming the realm of art and art criticism. In order to get an insight into the process, there is a need to recover the cultural outcome prior to the appearance of modern art, specifically between 1902 and 1930. The adoption of this approach is intended to deal with a process not sufficiently addressed in historiography which has focused on the twenties and subsequent years, and has ignored and censored the previous ones. "Realm of art" is introduced as an umbrella term that encompasses institutions, outcomes, artists, audience, authentication authorities, training, and criticism appearing in newspapers, journals, and magazines.

Palabras clave : Realm of art; Criticism; "The new".
