Background: a high number of different types of malocclusion were detected in the corresponding dental examination carried out in children from first through sixth grade from the Carlos Cuquejo primary school. Objective: to describe the prevalence of malocclusion in schoolchildren aged 5 to 11 years. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted in all the students with malocclusion from the Carlos Cuquejo primary school, in the municipality of Puerto Padre, Las Tunas province, from September 2011 through March 2012. The study variables included age, sex, presence of oral habits, type of malocclusion and risk factors. Results: prevalence of malocclusion was high (44.7%), particularly among females (55.3%). Regarding risk factors, oral habits and hereditary elements were the most common, accounting for 64.8% and 26.5%, respectively. Another significant finding was that 22.8% of the children had poor oral hygiene. Conclusion: malocclusion affected mostly girls aged 7 to 9 years. The main types of malocclusion found were vestibuloversion, crowding, anterior open bite and rotations. The most common risk factors were oral habits, hereditary influence and trauma.
