A group of 107 patients presenting with mild essential arterial hypertension according to the criteria of the VI Report of the Joint National Commitee, were studied. Patients underwent an echocardiogram aimed to assess the effect of arterial hypertension on the heart; all patients presenting with associated diseases such as diabetes mellitus, liver diseases, cardiopathies, diseases of the cardiac valve, and secondary hypertension. The existence of anatomical modifications in the left ventricle was evidenced in 48.6 % of the patients having mild arterial hypertension, as well as a concentric remodelling in 26.2 % of them, eccentric hypertrophy in 14.9 % and concentric hypertrophy in 7.5 %. A statistically significant association was determined between anatomical modifications of the left ventricle and obesity, time of evolution of the hypertensive disease, and levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p 0.05). It is concluded that even in cases of mild forms of arterial hypertension, different anatomical modifications of the left ventricle may exist.
