FIGUEREDO RODRIGUEZ, Pedro y GONZALEZ HERNANDEZ, José A.. Posibilidades de error al interpretar las variaciones transitorias del electroencefalograma interictal del paciente epiléptico. Rev cubana med [online]. 2000, vol.39, n.3, pp. 166-173. ISSN 1561-302X.
It is known that the interpretation of the EEG of epileptic patients at interictal stages of their clinical evolution is based on the appreciation of the normal characteristics and of the changes depending on age, on the distinction between the significant and non-significant transitory electrical activity, and on the correlation of the detected epileptiform anomalies with the clinical findings. Mistakes should not be made in the diagnosis and interpretation of the transitory interictal activities observed, including the recognition of patterns of vigil , somnolence and sleep characteristic of normal subjects, the adequate identification of the modifications of the recording produced by the possible multiple artifacts and the prevention of combinations of artifactual elements and the habitual physiological activity in EEG of normal individuals that is usually related to age and/or to the functional state. Some possibilities of errors that usally tend to confuse the interpretation of the EEG recordings in epileptic patients were analyzed on the basis of updated criteria related to the significance of the different temporary variations of the electrical cerebral activity and the experience of identifying EEG patterns that may confuse the final diagnosis
