A descriptive study was conducted aimed at evaluating the behavior of mortality from malignant tumors in patients from Granma province in the year 2000. Data of the individuals who died due to this cause and who lived in this province were taken from the register of deaths controlled by the statistics department of the provincial health sector. The following variables were taken into consideration: localization, sex, geographical zone and place of residence. Deaths resulting from malignant tumors are the second cause of death with a rate of 122.2 per 100 000 inhabitants and a ratio of 22.2 %, which means that a fifth of the total of deaths is for this cause. The number of deaths is larger among men, with a ratio of 1.4:1. The most frequent localizations are lung (232), prostate (104), colon (63) and corpus uteri (53). The coastal geographical zone has the highest incidence in mortality from malignant tumors. More than 70 % of the dead are patients over 60. Men from this group die more from this cause than from heart diseases. Most of women die when they are under 60 and the mortality from cancer is more frequent in females.
