From the foundation in 1966 of the Institute of Hematology and Immunology (IHI) as guiding center of specialty in Cuba, the main objective has been the search and application of more recent treatment protocols and the introduction of technological innovations for diagnosis and treatment of patients presenting with hemopathies allowing us to achieve cure levels similar to those of developed countries in diseases like the acute lymphoid leukemia in children and it has been possible to achieve the application of these protocols in all the Hematology services in our country. With the integral care of hemophilic patients and with the drepanocythemia its life expectancy has increased with a high quality of life. For all the National Health System (NHS) specialists have been trained, as well as nurses, technicians and other professionals linked to specialty who give contribution in different countries. The level achieved allows us the contribution in a relevant way in the development of bone marrow transplantation and also in the field of Regenerative Medicine it was possible the introduction the autotransplantation with stem cells in some diseases with the participation of different centers of the country. The blood safe and the guarantee of its quality has been a determinant objective in the Transfusion Medicine essential of all the branches of the medical sciences. This task and the successful results achieved, allowed the integration of a National Framework of Hematology services contributing en a decisive way to strengthening of NHS and it is a distinguished example of the achievements of revolutionary medicine. This experience opens the possibilities to increase the international cooperation and mainly of our region contributing to optimize the health levels and to improve the quality of life of our populations.
