A descriptive and prospective study was conducted with 100 patients (50 were civilian and 50 military men) on discharge from the Psychiatric Service of the "Dr. Joaquín Castillo Duany" Military Hospital, in Santiago de Cuba, from January, 1996, to January, 1997, aimed at showing the usefulness of the therapeutic community method at the Psychiatric Ward and at evaluating the level of acceptance of this procedure. It was demostrated that in the Discipline Commission there was a higher influence on the part of the surveyed patients with 38 % of both, respectively, and that the sensation of feeling like at home was significant. Those activities developed within the community scheme, as well as the participation of the nurse in the health team proved to be the milestones.
