Taking into consideration the importance of reducing the undesirable effects of surgical stress, it was designed a study on the behaviour of such variables a heart rate, diastolic pressure, systolic pressure and temperature before and after operation among 60 patients from the Urology Service and the Orthopedics Service (55 and 5, respectively) that underwent major surgery from January to June, 1996. The patients´ satisfaction with the attention received was also taken into account. The results of the 4 variables before and after the operation during 4 days were compared by the one-way variance analysis. A significant reduction of all of them was observed. Heart rate changes were not attributed to temperature decrease, but were probably determined by the high degree of satisfaction with the attention received and by the absence of complications. These results showed the significance of an adequate medical personnel-patient relationship in the normal evolution of the cases.

Palabras clave : STRESS [nursing]; SURGICAL PROCEDURES, OPERATIVE [adverse effects]; BLOOD PRESSURE; HEART RATE; BODY TEMPERATURE.
