SOTO GONZALEZ, Juana y VARGAS FAJARDO, Eresmilda. Prevalencia de la hipertensión arterial en el área del Policlínico-Facultad "Josué País García". Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 1999, vol.15, n.3, pp. 169-173. ISSN 1561-2961.
The elevation of arterial tension readings above the values considered as normal is one of the most frequent health problems observed in the Cuban population. A descriptive and retrospective study on arterial hypertension prevalence was conducted in the population of the area served by the "Josue País García" Polyclinic-Medical Faculty, in Santiago de Cuba, from January to December, 1996. The universe was composed of 1 424 hypertensives who live in the area at present, and from whom a simple sample of 260 patients was taken at random. These individuals were surveyed to collect variables such as: sex, age, nutritional evaluation, color of the skin, occupation and risk factors of the disease. Among the most important results were a prevalence of 7.2 % a higher frequency in the female sex, in the age group 30-39 and in black subjects of both sexes. Most of the patients were evaluated as having a normal weight. The 3 most significant risk factors were smoking habit, a diet with an increase of sodium and saturated fat and alcoholism. It was concluded that in the studied health area the prevalence of arterial hypertension was lower than the reported in other investigations made in the country.
