ABSTRACT In nursing practice are present to care and the care. To learn the meaning of to care could to transform in words that the nursing professional has exerted in practice and teaching. A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted in “Cira García” Clinic during 2008 to assess the perception of to care according the criteria of 72 nurses well-disposed to participate in research. A scientific method was applied with an inductive and deductive approach. In information collection we used a semiestructured survey and the Assessment Scale of the Care Meaning (EESC). Study variables include the care perception, age, sex, and years of practice, professional level and workplace. Data were statistically analyzed with non-parametric tests. There was a female sex predominance (75%), age between 30 and 39 years (37,50), marital status (married) (66,66%) and more than 10 years of work experience (77,77%). The greatest differences were among conceptions by general and master nurses, in the care conceptions as a human characteristic (0,094) and as moral imperious (0,043). We concluded that there are differences in relation to nursing care conception among the researched care groups and categories. Results emphasized the need of greater link between the teaching and its application in profession exercise.
