Patients: 160 pregnant women that had serum increasings of the alphafetoprotein during second trimester of pregnancy. Results: 4,37% of alphafetoprotein increasings was due to the presence of malformations, detected by ultrasonography examination, mainly anencephaly. 34,16% of pregnant women with increased alphafetoprotein and normal ultrasonography examination finished their gestation periods. Conclusions: Alphafetoprotein is a valuable biochemical marker for the diagnosis of congenital malformations and obstetric high risk pregnancies.
