A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out to identify cardiac remodelating in patients with essential hypertension at" Julio A. Mella" Conmunitary Polyclinic within the period from November 1999 to April 2001 . The study universe was composed of 2348 patients, a simple reandomized sample (sorting method) was tajen; out of 2001 patients belongin to fours health clinics of the family physician plan . The primary data source conssited in a survey elaborated for this purpose. The processing was performed in a computer, through a statistic package SPSS in a Windows media standart electrocardiograms were carried out Sakalow`s index and Cornell's. Criterium were used as criteria of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), and the echocardiographic study as well. The results show a prevalence of LVH of 46,26 %, they were more frequent in the group of 74 years and more, masculine sex, with and evolution time of one to five years, obesity, moderate arterial hypertension and alcoholism were the main factors. The echocardiogram was the most effective diagnostic method.
