A longitudinal retrospective and descriptive study was undertaken in women in women delivery by cesarean section was performed for the first time at the Provincial Gynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital of Camagüey, between January and June 2000, to determine its behaviour and repercussion. The universe of the study was comprised of 493 gravidae. The principal age group was that above 30 years; 62, 6 % of women were nulliparous. Chronic Arterial hypertension was the most frequent associated pathology; among those dependent on pregnancy was premature rupture of membranes. The most frequent indication of operation was fetal distress 36, 6 % of the neonates weighed between 3000 and 3499 grams at birth; low birth weight was present in 14, 2 % thirty five neonates were depressed at the first minute and 11 continued so at the fifth minute of birth, 6 of them weighed less than 2500 grams at birth One fetal death was recorded. The most relevant perinatal morbidity was prematury. The predominant maternal morbidity was puerperal fever.
