Background: The acute diarrhea constitutes the first cause of mortality in children less than five years in developing countries and it is one of the main causes of malnutrition. Objective: To identify risk factors present in the acute diarrheal diseases in this age group. Method: An epidemiological observational, analytic, longitudinal and prospective of case and control study was carried out, in children less than five years with acute diarrheal diseases in the health area Angarita I, Northeast Petare Parish, Sucre Municipality, Miranda State, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, from October 2003 to June 2005. Results: the association of the acute diarrheal disease and the energy protean malnutrition dominated none exclusive breast-feeding in the first four months, the age less than a year, the poor quality of the drinking water, the maternal age less than 17 years, the lack of maternal training. It did not associate sex, low birth weight and incomplete vaccination. Conclusions: An adequate promotion and prevention of the risk factors before indicated, through educational components and health promotion, would improve the health condition of the boy and his family.
