Resumen

JAMI VARGAS, Luis Patricio; SOLIS CARTAS, Urbano; MARTINEZ LARRARTE, José Pedro  y  SERRANO ESPINOSA, Irainis. Hippotherapy application in children with cerebral palsy. AMC [online]. 2016, vol.20, n.5, pp. 496-506. ISSN 1025-0255.

Background: hippotherapy has been used in the rehabilitation of patients with neurological affections with positive results, regarding the development of skills and the improvement of postural state. Objective: to diffuse the benefits of the application of hippotherapy in children with cerebral palsy. Methods: a descriptive retrospective study of 13 children with diagnoses of cerebral palsy was conducted. A hippotherapy program was designed, which was applied to the patients. Initial and further assessments were applied to data collection and its statistical processing. Results: the age average is 3.6 years ± 3. The most represented group of age was the three to five age group. Male sex prevailed (61, 5 %) and the skin color was white (69, 2 %). The majority of patients presented personal pathological antecedents that justified the disease. Conclusions: hippotherapy showed hopeful results in the development of skills in children with cerebral palsy. Improvement depends on the time, frequence, and length of hippotherapy. Nevertheless, deeper studies would be needed to verify this hypothesis.
