Introduction:
gastrointestinal stromal tumor is a rare disease. These tumors originate from the interstitial cells of Ramon y Cajal. The stomach and small intestine are the most frequent sites of localization. Definitive diagnosis is made by immunohistochemical studies.
Patient information:
a 76-year-old male patient was presented with abdominal pain in the left hypochondrium; a large tumor mass was found in the region. Computed axial tomography showed a tumor-like image at the level of the left hemiabdomen, posterior to the stomach. Surgical intervention was performed to resect the tumor. Pathological studies confirmed gastrointestinal stromal tumor with spindle cell sarcoma pattern.
Conclusions:
early recognition and adequate investigations are necessary in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms.
