A descriptive and prospective study was carried out on the results of the ambulatory major surgery in patients who were attended and diagnosed in the emergency room of "Dr. Joaquín Castillo Duany" Teaching Provincial Hospital in Santiago de Cuba from January, 2003 to June, 2007, who presented surgical emergency injuries, with the objective of showing the advantages of this surgical modality. Besides the indispensable additional tests for the preoperative diagnosis and the surgical intervention, the patients were grouped according to the American Society of Anesthesiology in groups I and II. In the case material the 15-30 year-old young men (55,3%), acute appendicitis as pathology (51,5%), laparoscopic surgery as procedure (in 96 of the total) and orotraqueal general anesthesia as anesthetic technique (80,6%) prevailed. The occurrence of scarce complications (3,8%) guaranteed the favorable clinical course of 228 from 237 operated people
