Introduction:

Advanced Practice Nursing, like any new development applied by nurses, contributes to expand professional skills of Nursing and helps to improve their visibility, prestige, political influence, income levels or work autonomy.

Objective:

to analyze the evidence available in the scientific literature on advanced practice nursing for maternal and child population in primary health care.

Methods:

we conducted a narrative review of complete and original texts published in the VHL, Pubmed, EBSCO, SciELO and Google Scholar databases in English, Portuguese and Spanish languages during five years. Keywords were applied in the combination of “advanced nursing practice” AND “primary health care” AND “child”.

Conclusions:

the analysis of the available evidence in the scientific literature on Advanced Practice Nursing for maternal and child population in the primary health care showed its recognition in other countries of the world, although not specifically included. The Analysis Instrument for the Performance of the Advanced Practice Nurse, from the instruments found for the definition of the competencies and domains of this practice in nursing, is specified as the one with the greatest evidence of validity and reliability.
