NOVO-RODRIGUEZ, Yembila; LOPEZ-GIL, Daniel Marcial; SEGUNDO-JASS, Carlos Fulgencio  y  REYES-HERNANDEZ, Lenia. Proposal of an elective course "Principal non-obstetric affections associated to the pregnancy". Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.5  Epub 01-Sep-2023. ISSN 1561-3194.

Introduction:

the absence of courses on the behavior of the main non-obstetric pathologies that can complicate pregnancy constitutes a weakness in the educational teaching process, if we take into consideration that many of these pathologies can coincide with pregnancy, causing decompensation and complications in the normal course of pregnancy.

Objective:

to design an optional course on the main non-obstetric conditions associated with pregnancy.

Methods:

a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at the General Teaching Hospital "Ciro Redondo García" during the 2020-2021 academic year. The population consisted of 60 students in their sixth year of medical studies. For the sample, 40 students were selected by simple random sampling. Theoretical methods were used: analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction; empirical methods: documentary analysis, student survey; and mathematical methods for processing the information in absolute and relative values.

Results:

the analysis of the methods used concludes that the medical degree programme does not cover sufficient content related to the main non-obstetric conditions associated with pregnancy, with 71,25 per cent of the responses in the surveys showing a low level of knowledge of these topics among final-year students, which justifies the proposal of an optional course to help resolve these shortcomings.

Conclusions:

the proposed programme is considered adequate by the experts, who highlight its contribution to the integral preparation of the health professional that is expected to be trained.
