Introduction:

developing informational skills in the formative processes of Medical Education demands the use of technology and information resources.

Objective:

to characterize the development of informational skills of students in the subject Research Methodology of the Medicine course of the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin.

Methods:

descriptive study with mixed approach in the first period of the course 2021. The universe was constituted by 435 first year students, an intentional sample of 108 was selected. theoretical and empirical level methods were used. A scale was designed to classify the students in the categories of High, Medium and Low according to the perception of their performance, and in the observation by the ten professors.

Results:

in the study plan of the Medicine course, there is no specific information skills that students should develop, the subject Research Methodology declares as a skill the use of services available on the Internet, with emphasis on Infomed. According to the students' perception of their informational skills, most of them are located in the Medium and High levels. According to observation, there is a greater prevalence in the Medium and Low categories. The concordance between perception and observation, through the Kappa index, was very good in the ability to recognize the need for information.

Conclusions:

insufficiencies were found in the informational skills of the first year students of Medicine.
