Introduction:

around five million women worldwide suffer from serious diseases associated with pregnancy; puerperal sepsis infections account for 16% of all maternal deaths.

Objective:

to characterize the risk factors in patients with puerperal infection at the “Fe del Valle Ramos” Hospital.

Methods:

an observational, descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to characterize risk factors in patients with puerperal infection at the “Fe del Valle Ramos” hospital in Manzanillo, Granma, Cuba from 2019 to 2020. The sampling technique was not performed, since the study population and the sample coincided, which consisted of 195 puerperal women admitted with a diagnosis of some type of puerperal infection.

Results:

the ages of 20 to 34 years were prevalent (66,1 %) and the most frequent delivery was by caesarean section for 63,1 %. The most significant predisposing factor was vaginal infection. Infection of the surgical wound was the predominant puerperal infection (48,2 %). (34,9 %) and staphylococcus was the most frequently found germ in microbiological studies (27,2 %).

Conclusions:

puerperal infection is a very common health problem, it is closely related to risk factors such as cervicovaginal infections, urinary infection, surgical wound infection and cesarean delivery.
