The non transferable chronic illnesses are among the first causes of death in Cuba . A descriptive study It is carried out in 255 patients who were admitted at the Hospital “General Calixto García” during the year 2005. The presence of chronic illnesses was valued as non transferable and its frequency to show a relationship with the nutritional state. The hospital population was characterized in the study, in both sexes and in groups of ages among 60-69, 70-79, 80-89 and of 90 years and more. We took measured anthropometrics of weight and it carves to calculate Body Mass Index. It was found that the most frequent illness was the arterial hypertension (56.47%), followed by the Ischemic Cardiopathy (41.17%) and Diabetes Mellitus (35.29%). There were 45 patients with Cancer to a 17.65%. In the hipertensive s patients, in those that had Ischemic Cardiopathy and in the diabetics the overweight it prevailed and the obesity (42.36%, 49.47% and 45.56% correspondingly). In the patients with cancer we found a bigger percent with normal nutritional state (48.89%) although these cases lost weight, followed by the malnutrition with 33.33%. The old men prevailed with 2 - 5 illnesses (75.29%). There exists a prevalence of the overweight and the obesity in the chronic illnesses and we should improve the attention and the nutritional education to the old persons, to prevent the m chronic illnesses and to control them.
