This paper provides definitions and necessary concepts for synchronization channel decoding of GSM radio interface (Um) to obtain the base station identity code (BSIC) and the frame number (FN). These data are essentials for the protocol analyzer synchronization process with a Base Transceiver Station (BTS). This research is a piece of a big developing solution to achieve this objective. It was made a study and analysis of the physical layer protocols described in the GSM Standards. Contribution of this research was obtained consistent and comprehensive documentation of GSM physical layer protocols which was scattered in the literature to our scope.
