Higher education needs to prepare professionals with the capacity to respond, efficiently and effectively, to the requirements of their time. This implies the continuous improvement of the performance of the teaching staff. Universities need to be in tune with current social demands. To do this, they must substantially modify the foundations of the conceptions and dynamics of contemporary educational systems, with emphasis on the training of teachers to be up to date. Only in this way they will be able to offer an answer to the needs of the integral formation of the professionals. The objective of this study is to characterize the continuous and postgraduate education process of the faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Education Sciences of the University of Guayaquil, Ecuador, between 1990 and 2016. With the employment, among others, of the historical-logical method, the educational programs and policies related to the research object were reviewed. Valuable stages and benchmarks were declared in order to determine the main characteristics of this process in the mentioned institution.
