The article analyzes the role that tutors occupy in the direction of the research process of their applicants in a process of professional and personal growth that involves participants in the construction of their own learning and that allows them to move from dependence to independence in the moments that exist for the elaboration of a thesis: writing and defense. Some of the main characteristics that tutors must possess as a mediator of the process are also analyzed; the types of tutoring and tutors; as well as its functions. It also offers recommendations for: writing and defending a thesis; choose appropriate tutors; and carry out the advice of a thesis.
