Resumen

Background:

drug dependence constitutes a public health problem whose dimension is linked to the high percentage of people involved in consumption, hence the importance of its knowledge and management through the training of the future doctor.

Objective:

to identify the level of knowledge about the main addictions and their comprehensive management in third year students of Medicine.

Methods:

a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out at Santiago de Cuba University of Medical Sciences, Faculty No. 1. Theoretical methods were used: analytical-synthetic, inductive-deductive, historical-logical and the transition from the abstract to the concrete; and empirical: documentary analysis and survey in the form of a student questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

Results:

the level of knowledge on the main addictions and their comprehensive management is insufficient in the students, either for the addiction to marijuana or to cocaine, a predominance of inadequate answers related to the form of consumption and the identification of signs and symptoms was verified that give doctors the idea on acute intoxication, as well as the recognition of the complications of consumption and its management in a comprehensive way.

Conclusions:

the insufficient knowledge on the main addictions and their comprehensive management in medical students demand to review this subject from early stages in the training of the future doctor, taking into account the importance of this problem in the current social context.
