CONCEPCION TOLEDO, Diana N.; GONZALEZ SUAREZ, Erenio y MINO VALDES, Juan Esteban. A current vision of science as a direct productive force. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2018, vol.10, n.4, pp. 54-59. Epub 02-Sep-2018. ISSN 2218-3620.
The development of science has been a fundamental pillar in scientific progress since its institutional creation in the late eighteenth century to the present. Universities, in their role as a generator of knowledge and an essential part of the scientific community, became the center where research is concentrated and agglutinated in an organized way. The objective of this study was to carry out a synthesis of the path of science, with emphasis from the 50s of the last century, when there is a change in the conception of its activity, acquiring a marked social character leaving behind its traditional approach that for many years accompanied its exercise. The influence of historical and social processes is analyzed for its verification and consolidation of a vision of current science as a direct productive force. From this point of view, the essence of university research is addressed, its mission reformed and updated based on its links with society and the business sector. It is reflected on the need for university research to be in correspondence with the demands of a science that is committed and pertinent to the development of the Latin American region, a challenge to multiply from its role as an institution of knowledge, the quality, quantity and relevance of its research and technological development to contribute to a greater economic and social impact in the development process of these countries.
