The article presents a critical assessment of the self-assessment processes, external evaluation and accreditation in institutions of Higher Education (IES) in Cuba from the stage of self-evaluation to obtaining higher levels of accreditation in the plenary session of the National Accreditation Board (JAN) based on the study of the processes carried out in six institutions of the country. The evaluative practice is based on knowledge, but also produces new knowledge, that is why the experiences learned are presented in relation to the principles and challenges faced in this field and the results obtained from the assessment of the external self-evaluation and evaluation reports, where the accumulated experiences that constitute starting points and the aspects that manifest a lower level of achievement are indicated. According to this experience, it is allowed to make recommendations that can be considered in order to develop successful processes that contribute to the improvement of the quality of the institutions.
