Resumen

MARZO PENA, Alejandro; RODRIGUEZ FLEITAS, Xiomara  y  FRESQUET PEDROSO, María Magdalena. Sign languaje. Its importance in deaf education. Varona [online]. 2022, n.75  Epub 02-Dic-2022. ISSN 1992-8238.

Sign language as a visuo-gestural-spatial language of deaf people is of great importance as a symbol of identity and cultural heritage of deaf people because it allows them to communicate without restrictions and also favors their linguistic and cognitive development. This article recognizes its linguistic, communicative and cultural value in the education of deaf people. Sign language is conceived as a right and a resource of the deaf community. It also emphasizes its linguistic value as a first language and linguistic basis for learning to read and write as a second language. It specifies the foundations that support the power of sign language for its richness, creativity and authenticity, as a first language, natural language, mother tongue and support for learning reading and writing, as well as what this language represents for their preparation for life and participation in society. It is not about occupying a physical space, but about equalizing opportunities based on the linguistic, cognitive and communicative development achieved as an expression of a deaf culture that is diverse and has the legitimate right to participate like the others.

Palabras clave : deaf culture; dactylema; education; deaf people.
