Resumen

GONZALEZ SABIN, Miguel Antonio et al. Endoscopic percutaneous gastrostomy with modified Pezzer's stent. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2008, vol.80, n.4, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3119.

INTRODUCTION. Endoscopic percutaneous gastrostomy requires a special stent commercialized in an expensive set, which makes difficult its wide use in patients requiring gastrostomy and whose unique contraindication is the non-dilatable esophageal stenosis. The present research was aimed at introducing endoscopic percutaneous gastrostomy in the pediatric surgical practice with a modified Pezzer's stent replacing the stents commercialized to this end. METHODS. A descriptive study was conducted with all the children referred to the Service of Pediatric Surgery of «William Soler» Hospital between January 2002 and December 2007 for an endoscopic percutaneous gastrostomy, in which a modified Pezzer's stent was used. The following data were collected: age, pathological history, indication of gastrostomy, duration of the procedure, complications, postoperative stay and costs. RESULTS. 31 endoscopic percutaneous gastrostomies were performed by using the modified Pezzer's stent. Children were between 0 and 15 years old and it was mainly used in patients with severe brain damage to make nutrition easy. There were no complications and $ 4181.90 were saved on not purchasing the commercial sets. CONCLUSIONS. The percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy prevents laparotomies and all their consequences (less pain, less formation of adherences, etc.), among other advantages. The procedure may be carried out outside the unit, with a significant reduction of surgical time, postoperative stay and hospital costs.
