Resumen

VARONA PEREZ, Patricia et al. Comportamiento de la mortalidad por bronquitis crónica: Cuba, 1980-1997. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 1999, vol.18, n.2, pp. 95-103. ISSN 1561-3011.

Chronic bronchitis is a disease which mortality and morbidity can be prevented. With the objective of determining the situation of mortality in Cuba from 1980-1997, a longitudinal descriptive study was performed, which covered all those deceased whose basic cause of death was included in Code 491 (Ninth International Classification of Diseases). Variables such as age, sex, province and area of residence (urban, rural), site of occurrence of death, date os death and necropsy were considered. Proportions, ratios, crude & specific rates by age groups and sex were used. The average mortality rate of this period was 2. 1 x 100 000 population, showing a decreasing trend. The risk to death was higher in males, mainly in those aged 75 years and over. The urban areas were more linked to a high death risk than rural areas. Guantanamo province was the most affected territory with a necropsy rate exceeding the national average figure. The highest number of deaths occured in July, August and September which are the warmest months in Cuba. It is required to go deeper into the situation of mortality at a local level, in a differentiated way, so as to put health actions into practive for adequate control and prevention.
