Resumen

FERNANDEZ-BRITTO, José E et al. Beneficios de una dieta de muy bajas calorías: experiencia cubana durante 8 semanas (1998). Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2000, vol.19, n.2, pp. 116-127. ISSN 1561-3011.

A total of 128 overweight patients aged 30-60 underwent a very low calory diet (Cambridge diet) as the only food during 8 weeks. Patients were classified into 4 groups: 1. obese: 32 patients; 2. hypertensive obese: 32 patients; 3. diabetic obese: 32 patients; 4. dyslipidemic obese: 32 patients. Each patient was weekly examined by his medical team. The following medical variables were studied: age, sex, weight and height. Body mass index, arterial pressure, and waist and hips circumference were analyzed every week. Haematological variables were examined on the initial weeks, and on the 4th and the final week. Glycaemia and insulin were measured among the non diabetic at the beginning and at 120 minutes, whereas glycosilated haemoglobin was measured in the diabetics. Fibrinogen, thyroid hormones, lipid profile, total cholesterol, LDLc, VLCDLc and triglycerides were also determined. In the 4 groups it was observed a marked reduction of body weight between 10 and 15 kg. The mean of reduction of the waist circumference was of 12 cm. The body mass index and the values of systolic and diastolic pressure decreased considerably. As regards the lipid profile the reduction of triglycerides was very significant in the 4 groups. LDLc also decreased but in lower proportions. It was observed a remarkable increase of HDLc in the 4 groups. The general values of the haematological picture were never modified during the diet. Discrete constipation (23%), halitosis (22%), headache (5%) and asthenia (3%) were the adverse effects
