CANO GARCIA, Mérida; ROMERO HERNANDEZ, Teresa  y  LEAL ORTEGA, Zenaida. Tumescencia peneal nocturna: utilidad clínica. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2001, vol.20, n.2, pp. 136-139. ISSN 1561-3011.

The nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) are erections that occur frequently associated with a period of REM sleep (rapid eyes movement) and it is monitored by means of mercury manometers placed on the basis and on the glans penis and connected to the electroencephalograph. This test allows to measure the circumferential enlargement of the penis, the number of nocturnal erections and their duration. It also gives information on the integrity of the neural and vascular mechanisms that take part in the physiology of erection and, therefore, the application of nocturnal penile tumescence contributes to the differential diagnosis between the organic and the psychogenic sexual erectile dysfunction. Some clinical considerations are made as a result of the application of this technique

Palabras clave : PENILE ERECTION; ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY; SLEEP, REM; SEXUAL DYSFUNCTIONS, PSYCHOLOGICAL; IMPOTENCE [diagnosis].
