Resumen

BOLET ASTOVIZA, Miriam; SOCARRAS SUAREZ, María Matilde  y  CABRERA ROJO, Ileana. Apoyo nutricional a pacientes quirúrgicos del Hospital Universitario "General Calixto García". Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2002, vol.21, n.1, pp. 9-14. ISSN 1561-3011.

37 patients with indication of major surgery were nutritionally evaluated by anthropometric and laboratory variables to assess the preoperative and postoperative nutritional treatment. Those who had a faulty nutrition were on a hyperprotein and hypercaloric diet and were fed by parenteral and enteral route. Average age was 54 and the prevailing nutritional state was low weight. There was a high percentage of malnourished in the age group 30-59. 62 % of the sample had neoplasias. The highest number of complications corresponded to the malnourished of a total of 19 patients. Of 13 subjects that underwent elective surgery, 10 (76.9 %) improved their nutritional status. 50 % of those who underwent emergency surgery (n=6) died. It was concluded that the nutritional status of the patients that are going to be operated on should be improved by giving nutritional support to the cases requiring it in order to reduce morbidity and mortality.
