Resumen

FERRERO RODRIGUEZ, Lis María et al. Some antomical characterisitics of the schizophrenic’s brain. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2004, vol.23, n.3, pp. 163-168. ISSN 1561-3011.

Postmortem morphometric studies of various encephalic structures, such as Broca’s area, Wernicke’s area, hippocampus, cerebellum, the upper portion of the precentral and postcentral giri, the frontal and temporal lobes (by sections), the lateral ventricles and basal nuclei, were conducted by using the manual count method. It was found a reduction of the encephalic and cerebral weights, of both hemispheres in the schizophrenic brains, as well as an atrophy of Broca’s area, decrease of the area of gray and white substance of Wernicke’s area, atrophy of the hippocampus and a reduction of the areas of the frontal lobes and of the right temporal lobe; everything in brains from schizophrenics in comparison with controls. A relevant aspect observed was the loss of asimmetry and of the intrahemispherical and interhemispherical morphological correlations in these brains. On the other hand, in some brains from schizophrenics there were neither signs of cortical or central atrophy, nor differences of the ventricular dimensions, but there was a decrease of the white substance. It was considered necessary to continue the work of this group, using more acurate morphometric methods that allow to make a more detailed analysis of every encephalic structure
