MONTERO VIZCAINO, Yuleimis; ALONSO URIA, Rosa María  y  VIZCAINO ALONSO, María del Carmen. Some neonatal factors related to birth depression. Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital of Guanabacoa, 2009. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2011, vol.30, n.4, pp. 457-463. ISSN 0864-0300.

Introduction: The depression may be present in the newborn or to appear later. In the first case generally the Apgar score is used where those with a score under the sixth or fifth minutes are considered as severely depressed, independently the score at first minute. Those with a scale of 1-3 points during the first minute and more of six during the fifth ones are considered as moderate depressed. In our country the creation of a maternal and child program allows to see the diminution of the neonatal risk factors that could to lead to the newborn death. Objective: To identify some neonatal factors associated with depression at birth. Methods: Across-sectional, retrospective and descriptive study was conducted in the Gynecology-Obstetrics Hospital of Guanabacoa from January to December, 2009. Universe included 1 688 live birth newborns during the analyzed period and sample included 53 neonates developing depression at birth during the same period and place. Variables related to the newborn were assessed including: sex, weight in grams and major congenital malformations. As a measure of descriptive summary the number and the percent age was used; results are showed in tables. Results: The great number of depressed neonates corresponded to male sex, the normal weight was the predominant group and the more frequent congenital malformations were those of digestive tract. Conclusions: There is a progressive decrease in the incidence of risk factors, by example, the neonatal malformations associated with depression at birth.

Palabras clave : Depression at birth; neonatal factors; Apgar score.
