An evaluation study of the Program for the Reduction of Low Birth Weight (LBW) was conducted in the province of Santiago de Cuba from 1990 to 1996. Those professionals related to the Program were surveyed to evaluate the form in which the program was applied. Their opinions complemented a statistical study on the behaviour of the problem in that territory and the main risk factors and indicators of LBW. As part of the evaluation of the Program, a minimum set of indicators were defined and evaluated to study the LBW as a whole and is fundamental relations. All the information gathered showed that the application of the Program in that province was not efficient, since its purpose, general objectives and goals for that period were not fulfilled, However, some positive effects were observed due to its application and progresses in the fight against this problem. Some of the difficulties found in the management process of the Program, together with the above mentioned, proved that the Program was not enough.
